CT: Despite the fact that wikis provide an easy-to-use, free and powerful means to edit information, fewer than 1% of visitors contributed content to the wiki. These results may be a function of limited interest in the topic area, the review methodology itself, lack of familiarity with the wiki, and the incentive structure of academic publishing. Controversial and timely topics in addition to incentives and organizational support for Web 2.0 impact metrics might motivate greater participation in online collaborative efforts to keep scientific knowledge up to date.

N: 1. Web page that can be edited by browsers, by 2002, abstracted from names of such sites (such as Wikipedia, launched January 2001), the original being WikiWikiWeb, introduced and named by Ward Cunningham in 1995, from Hawaiian wikiwiki “fast, swift.”
2. World Wide Web (WWW) site that can be modified or contributed to by users. Wikis can be dated to 1995, when American computer programmer Ward Cunningham created a new collaborative technology for organizing information on Web sites.
3. Cultural Interrelation: The Wiki Wiki Shuttle is a fare-free shuttle bus system at the Honolulu International Airport. Shuttles run between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM local time, carrying people and baggage between the various terminals.
In the Hawaiian language the word “wiki” means quick, and “wiki wiki” implies very quick. The shuttle’s name inspired Ward Cunningham to call his new website “WikiWikiWeb”.[1] Cunningham’s site was designed to allow visitors to the site to edit its content, and this type of website came to be known as a “wiki,” a prominent example of which is Wikipedia.
