CT: Microturbines are small-in-size electricity generators that burn both gaseous and liquid fuels to create high-speed rotation, which turns an electrical generator. Microturbines run at high speeds and, like larger gas turbines, can be used to only generate power, or to generate both power and usable exhaust heat. This is referred to as Combined Heat and Power, or CHP. Microturbines typically provide electricity that is cheaper and cleaner than buying energy from your local utility company.

N: 1. From micro- (word-forming element meaning “small, microscopic; magnifying; one millionth,” from Latinized comb. form of Greek mikros “small, little, petty, trivial, slight” and turbine (1838, from French turbine (19c.), from Latin turbinem (nominative turbo) “spinning top, eddy, whirlwind, that which whirls,” related to turba “turmoil, crowd”. Originally applied to a wheel spinning on a vertical axis driven by falling water. Turbo in reference to gas turbine engines is attested from 1904).
2. A power generation system that is based on a combination of a small gas turbine and a directly driven high-speed generator.
3. Based on the gas turbine engine developed in 1938 in England, a micro-turbine utilizes very high internal combustion pressures to rotate a power output shaft. Rotation and torque of a power output shaft is transferred, in the case of a micro-turbine generator, to an alternating current electrical generator. 4. The electricity created by the high-speed generator is converted into useful voltage and frequency by a power converter that is also part of the system. The microturbine uses a combustor that can run on various fuels such as natural gas, diesel, ethanol, and biogas.
