CT: This project is investigating heat loss from high-temperature solar thermal receivers and developing the next generation of improved receiver designs to reduce that loss.
Experimental and computational modelling are being used to improve the understanding, prediction and management of convection and radiation heat loss in high-temperature solar thermal receivers.
While general results applicable to a wide range of systems will be published, the study also aims to develop a significantly improved receiver intended for use on a dish concentrator.
This new receiver will be built and tested with the aid and involvement of CSIRO in Australia and Sandia National Laboratories in the US.
The resulting receiver will be available for commercial adoption, and it is hoped the resulting expertise will also be of use to the solar thermal industry in Australia and internationally, facilitating a reduction in the cost of solar thermal electricity.

N: 1. dish (n): Old English disc “plate, bowl, platter,” from Latin discus “dish, platter, quoit,” from Greek diskos “disk, platter”. A common West Germanic borrowing; Old High German borrowed the word as tisc “plate,” but German tisch now means “table,” in common with other later Romanic forms (such as Italian desco, French dais). Meaning “concave reflector or antenna” attested from 1948.
concentrator (n): From concentrate (v.), 1630s, “to bring or come to a common center,” from concenter (1590s), from Italian concentrare, from Latin com- “together” + centrum “center”. Meaning “condense” is from 1680s. Sense of “mentally focus” is c.1860. Related: Concentrated; concentrating + -ator Latin -ator, from -a-, stem vowel of 1st conjunction + -tor, agent suffix.
2. A reflector designed in the shape of a parabola to focus extra sunlight onto the absorber of a concentrating collector.
