CT: Geothermal energy can be recovered inexpensively and in an environmentally friendly way using geothermal probes or collectors. Heat is extracted from the ground via one or more closed pipe loops. The heat transfer medium is brine, a mix of water and antifreeze. Geothermal energy can be used both for heating and for cooling.
Variants of geothermal extraction in the area close to the surface are as follows:
- Vertically inserted geothermal probes usually positioned at a depth of 70 to 160 m as single or double loop system
- Horizontally installed collectors in layers close to the surface, generally at a depth of 1.5 m.

N: Geothermal probes that are widely spread in Central and Northern Europe are characterised by the fact that they require only a small surface and that they utilise a constant temperature level. Plastic U-shaped pipes are inserted into vertical or inclined borings. Then these borings are filled with a special, swelling, permanent and sealing mixture of very fine particles in a liquid (suspension). This ensures the functionability of the geothermal probe system and good heat transfer. The plastic pipes act as heat exchangers and absorb the heat from the earth.
