CT: If the New York Times’s latest article is to be believed, artificial intelligence is moving so fast it sometimes seems almost “magical.” Self-driving cars have arrived; Siri can listen to your voice and find the nearest movie theatre; and I.B.M. just set the “Jeopardy”-conquering Watson to work on medicine, initially training medical students, perhaps eventually helping in diagnosis. Scarcely a month goes by without the announcement of a new A.I. product or technique. Yet, some of the enthusiasm may be premature: as I’ve noted previously, we still haven’t produced machines with common sense, vision, natural language processing, or the ability to create other machines. Our efforts at directly simulating human brains remain primitive.

N: 1. – artificial (adj): late 14c., in the phrase artificial day “part of the day from sunrise to sunset,” from Old French artificial, from Latin artificialis “of or belonging to art,” from artificium. Meaning “made by man” (opposite of natural) is from early 15c. Applied to things that are not natural, whether real (artificial light) or not (artificial flowers). Artificial insemination dates from 1897. Artificial intelligence “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines” was coined in 1956.
– intelligence (n): late 14c., “faculty of understanding,” from Old French intelligence (12c.), from Latin intelligentia, intellegentia “understanding, power of discerning; art, skill, taste,” from intelligentem (nominative intelligens) “discerning,” present participle of intelligere “to understand, comprehend,” from inter- “between” + legere “choose, pick out, read”).
Meaning superior understanding, sagacity” is from early 15c. Sense of “information, news” first recorded mid-15c., especially “secret information from spies” (1580s). Intelligence quotient first recorded 1921 (see I.Q.).
Abbreviation: AI.

2. The subfield of computer science concerned with developing intelligent computer programs that can solve problems, learn from experience, understand language, interpret visual scenes, and, in general, behave in a way that would be considered intelligent if observed in a human.

3. Artificial intelligence is already all around you, from web search to video games. AI methods plan your driving directions, filter your spam, and focus your cameras on faces. AI lets you guide your phone with your voice and read foreign newspapers in English. Beyond today’s applications, AI is at the core of many new technologies that will shape our future. From self-driving cars to household robots, advancements in AI help transform science fiction into real systems.

4. Areas of AI activity include expert systems, natural language understanding, speech recognition, vision and robotics.

5. Cultural Interrelation: Among others, we can mention the movie Artificial Intelligence: A.I. (2001) by Stephen Spielberg. A highly advanced robotic boy longs to become “real” so that he can regain the love of his human mother.
