CT: The term baud is important in technology because it refers to the rate at which information is transferred along a communication channel.
Specifically, it signifies the number of changes in the transmission signal per second, such as frequency, phase, amplitude, or any combination of them.
Baud rate is often used as a measure of the speed of data transmission, with higher baud rates indicating faster communication.
This concept is vital in various communication systems, such as modems and telecommunication networks, as it enables engineers to design and optimize systems for efficient data transfer, ultimately leading to better performance and enhanced user experience.

N: 1. The term baud was originally a unit of telegraph signalling speed, set at one Morse code dot per second. Or, more generally, the reciprocal of the duration of the shortest signalling element. It was proposed at the International Telegraph Conference and named after J.M.E. Baudot (1845-1903), the French engineer who constructed the first successful teleprinter.
. Baud is an eponym for Emile Baudot, the pioneer of early telegraph communication.
. Abbreviation: b.

2. A baud /bawd/ (plural “baud”) is the unit in which the information carrying capacity or “signalling rate” of a communication channel is measured. One baud is one symbol (state-transition or level-transition) per second. This coincides with bits per second only for two-level modulation with no framing or stop bits.

3. In serial communication, data is transmitted directly by 1s and 0s. This means that for each change in state, a single bit is transmitted from one entity to another. So, in this still very much in-use implementation, baud, or symbols per second, is the same as bits per second.
However, with clever encoding, it is possible to transmit more than one bit of information for each symbol. In a situation where it is possible to send either 0, 1, 2, or 3 volts over a transmission line once per second, the baud rate (i.e. signals per second) would be 1. However, the bit rate would be twice that, as each signal encodes four possibilities for two bits of information.
