CT: The user interface is often used in the context of computer systems and electronic devices. The user interface of a mechanical system, a vechicle, or an industrial installation is sometimes referred to as the Human-Machine Interface (HMI). HMI is a modification of the original term Man-Machine Interface (MMI). In practice, the abbreviation MMI is still frequently used, although some may claim that MMI stands for something different now. Another abbreviation is Human-computer interaction (HCI), but is more commonly used for Human-computer interaction than Human-computer interface. In a word, the terms refer to the “layer” that separates a human who is operating a machine from the machine itself.

N: 1. Also known as a MMI. A MMI is a software application that present information to an operator or user about the state of a process, and to accept and implement the operators control instructions. Typically information is displayed in a graphic format (Graphical User Interface or GUI). An HMI is often a part of a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system.
2. The set of inputs, outputs and special actions as well as the man-machine interaction mechanism, including dialogue procedures and the interrelationships identified for these entities in the various functional areas.
3. Devices of increasing sophistication are becoming available to mediate the human-computer interaction. These include graphic devices, touch-sensitive devices, and voice-input devices.
4. man-machine interface; MMI: term and abbreviation officially approved by the Electronics and Telecommunications Terminology Committee.
