CT: Microgrids are local power grids that can be operated independently of the main – and generally much bigger – electricity grid in an area. Microgrids can be used to power a single building, like a hospital or police station, or a collection of buildings, like an industrial park, university campus, military base or neighbourhood. Groups of microgrids that are linked together can also power bigger areas, like towns or cities.

From micro– (word-forming element meaning “small, microscopic; magnifying; one millionth,” from Latinized comb. form of Greek mikros “small, little, petty, trivial, slight” and grid (n): 1839, shortening of gridiron. City planning sense is from 1954 (hence gridlock). Meaning “network of transmission lines” first recorded 1926.

2. Small-scale power distribution systems integrating renewable energy. They can improve electric reliability, increase resilience, support clean energy and reinforce the central grid.

3. Microgrids have different components:

  • electricity generation resources.
  • Intermittent energy resources.
  • Energy storage.
  • Load management.
  • Control and communications.

They can be remote, also called off-grid microgrids, that are set up in places too far away to be connected to the main electricity grid.

Grid-connected microgrids have a connection to the main grid but can switch away from this.

Networked microgrids are groups of microgrids that are connected together to serve a wide geographic area.

4. Must not be confused with “smart grid”.

The microgrid is engineered to work in small community areas. On the other hand, the smart grid designed to handle power supply for large communities and is the digital technology used for two-way communication between utilities and their customers, and sensors along transmission lines.

5. In the fields of Power Networks and Distrib. Stations (Elec.); Solar Energy; Hydroelectric Power Stations; Wind Energy: An integrated power delivery system consisting of interconnected loads and DER [Distributed Energy Resources] which, as an integrated system, can operate in parallel with the grid or in an intentional island mode.

. By definition, a microgrid is not connected to a public utility grid.
