CT: NOx is a generic term for the various nitrogen oxides produced during combustion.
They are believed to aggravate asthmatic conditions, react with the oxygen in the air to produce ozone, which is also an irritant and eventually form nitric acid when dissolved in water.
When dissolved in atmospheric moisture the result can be acid rain which can damage both trees and entire forest ecosystems.

N: 1. nitrogen (n): From French nitrogène. Coined in by French chemist Jean Antoine Chaptal (1756-1832), from the combination form of Greek nitron (sodium carbonate) and French gène (producing). The gas was identified in part by analysis of nitre.
oxide (n): From French oxide (1787), coined by G. de Morveau and A. Lavoisier from ox(ygène) and (ac)ide (acid). Compound of oxygen with another element.

  • You can be exposed at home or at work, indoors or outdoors, through smoking cigarettes or breathing second-hand cigarette smoke.
  • You can be exposed at work if you work in a facility that produces nitric acid, explosives such as dynamite and TNT, or welded metals.
